  Biography

Alex Liss started riding as a child with Roger Brown at Brownwood Farm. He and a few other instructors at the farm taught a great base and gave every opportunity to learn the basics of horse care. From there, Alex went on to ride sale horses and lease ponies and horses with Peggy Weldon who since relocated to the Nashville area. Peggy sold Alex her first horse, Captain who had been doing the Mini-Prix jumpers with Kirk Kamish. Captain took Alex quickly from the hunter ring to the big jumpers with local trainer Patty McGarty, and then went to Athens with Alex for an education at UGA. While in Athens, Alex rode with Ginny Smith and competed on UGA's IHSA Equestrian Team. It was on the team that she was introduced to the principles of the American System of Forward Riding, and a holistic approach to horse care and training. It was the amazing changes seen in Captain due to the huge difference in practical theory that really turned Alex on to this lesser known, better system of riding and training. During her college years, Alex also catch rode for Kathy Jones of Spring Break Farm, broke 2 small Welsh ponies, and one QH mare, taught lessons and trained for a few boarders where Captain was kept, and interned as the head instructor and trainer at Seven Hills Farm in Rome, GA. Out of college, with a B.S. Animal Science and an emphasis in Equine Management, Alex lived for a month on a horse sales farm in Tryon, NC where she enjoyed schooling sales horses until a closer-to-home job was offered to her by Kristie Dimarakis of Stonegate Farm. Alex worked for Stonegate teaching the non-boarder lesson program and coaching the Northview High and Stonegate High and Middle school IEA teams until spring 2008 when she was offered a position coaching at In Your Dreams Farm. In June of 2008, after having had a sampling of all sorts of different business models, Alex incorporated Hunter Valley Farms and began her own small business in NE Cumming, when mentor and coach Anne Kenan (www.annekenan.com) walked into her life and helped put her on an even better track conditioning the horses and developing the riders. After two years of semi-successfully trying to convince the Atlantans to drive out to Cumming, Alex found an unbelievable property in Milton (right where Roswell, Alpharetta, and Milton connect) for her business. She now trains horses and teaches lessons primarily at this location, while still freelancing to reach clients in Cumming. Alex has also studied riding abroad at the Huntley School of Equitation (Summers 2003-2008) and Hartpury College (1 week 2003) in England, and attended clinics with Olympic rider Debi Connor.
